Tiger's Tears

Our year end function was held at Tiger's Milk in Bryanston this afternoon along with loadshedding which started yesterday and continuing today at level 4. Eish what is our government doing to this country, what?

Anyway Tiger's Milk was packed to the rafters with millennials having a Friday afternoon of note. It looks like a number of year end parties are happening at the same time. We started with nachos, piled up in a head and smothered in cheese and guacamole sauce, yummy. Most of us ordered off the burger menu including me but the burgers were so huge that Josh had to show us how to eat them.

Watching over our neighbourhood

Does anyone remember Squad Cars, a radio drama brought to our South African radios from the late 60s to the early 80s by General Motors. "The story you are about to hear is true. Details are supplied from the official case files by the South African Police. Only names and places have been changed to protect innocent people involved." These words that caused my dad to turn up the radio on a Friday evening.

Today we hardly see any police cars patrolling our streets anymore and local Community Police Forums have filled that gap of our neighbourhoods safe. Here are 3 locals we keep watch, AJ one of the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch patrollers, Marga from ER24, and Sam from the RNW Ops Room.

Salsa

Okay this is my forth and final year end function of the year, the combined Websense and Cellcor lunch at Salsa, a Mexican restaurant. From left to right, Graham, Josh, Trish, Sam, Taleesha, Enia, and Scott.

I am not a big chilli lover hence Mexican has never been high on my list but I must say that I really enjoyed the food served by Salsa and had a great time. It is hot outside and I can now do with a siesta about now.

Samwise the Brave

Okay not quite Sam from Tolkein’s stories, but Sam from Bosasa. Whenever someone says that their name is Sam I think of Samwise Gamgee, and yes my hobbits, it is a quote about him from The Two Towers that bring me inspiration now in these dark days. "There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."

And Sam bravely re-glues down the piece of carpet tile that has being a safety hazard in my office for a while now thereby bringing a glimmer of hope that everything will be alright in the end. Oh and did I mention we have a new Espresso coffee machine in our office. Watch me bounce off the walls now.

First Two

I am still moving my stuff out of the old house and don't know where to put it all. I have still one load left and the curtains.

This afternoon I decided to rest as it has been rather tiring. Just before four, Samantha came round with her dogs thereby becoming my first visitor to my cosy cottage. We scouted the land below the cottage for possible dog walking trails. It is beautiful with long grasses, dams and horse trails. The dogs had a wonderful time and when we arrived back we chatted to my neighbour Jacque who also has dogs and walks them along the trails. Sam said that she will defiantly tell the others about this area.

After Sam left Craig popped in to welcome me to my new home but couldn't stay long as he was off to dinner at Ghazal.

UnFreedom Day

The sun has decided to hide its face on what the ruling party of South Africa call Freedom Day. What is freedom? Abahlali baseMjondolo which means shack dwellers in isiZulu are quoted saying "Once again the poor will be herded into stadiums so that the politicians can tell the people to celebrate their freedom" What freedom when the poor still live in such poverty and the rich politicians live in the lap of luxury. So how did I celebrate my UnFreedom? Well Sam our gardener who lives in a shack came over to my home and we did some maintenance to our house. He went back to his shack and wife with a double days pay. Much better than hanging around on this cold winters day thinking how free you actually not.
