The Nene
Rescued from the brink of extinction, the Nēnē or commonly known as the Hawaiian goose is the world’s rarest goose. Although it is the official bird of Hawaii, back in 1952 the population was only 30 nene. Thanks to the efforts of conservationists, the nene number about 2,500.
And this morning, I am privileged to sit down on the walkway very near these two young Hawaiian geese couple. The male was unsure what to make of me, do I come bearing gifts of a tasty morsel or two?
