With the death of BBM, and Mxit falling along the wayside, what are the different mobile chat platforms that are still used today in South Africa? Okay SMS or Short Message Services are still relevant but exorbitant expensive, thanks to the likes of Vodacom and MTN’s tight hold and Cell C’s lack of data coverage.

From my research using a small focus group has revealed that WhatsApp is still holding out in the lead, with Twitter a trailing second place. Following up on the two leaders are the rest of the pack, Instagram’s chat, Snap Chat, Facebook’s Messenger, the Chinese WeChat, Microsnot's Skype, and Google’s poor attempt to swim in the social pool, Hangouts.
