Sizzling Red Head
Look who crossed my path this afternoon, a fiery red head zombie. As the words "BRAINS!" fell off her lips, I turned and ran, mommmmy!
If you reading this, I am still alive, holding out as long as I can against the Amazonian Zombies. Shish, I hear something sizzling outside, scraping up to the door...

Shudufhadzo
What is in a name? I fill up my Vespa often at the Engen garage down the road from my work and this young petrol attendant has always been very helpful. Only today did I notice his name badge and well this is the first time I came across the name Shudufhadzo.
Shudufhadzo tells me that he is from Venda, well that explains it then as this is not one of the common isZulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Pedi, or even Tswana names that we find here in Johannesburg. I tried to find out what the name means but I don't know many Vendas nor can I find it on the internet. What I did find out that it is a common Venda name. What I like about the Venda people are the women with their satellite dishes, is their traditional respect for men.
Shudu Vat So!

Safety Dance
Seeing this iDance earphones on Sanda’s desk reminded me of the band Men without Hats who took to the radio waves way back in the 80s with their hits Safety Dance and Pop goes the World. Okay Ilana, I was bopping to this at the Port Shepstone High School socials which will now be giving my age away. Pop goes my world.
We can dance if we want to
We've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it, never gonna lose it
Everything'll work out right
I say, we can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
For those that remember the 80s will now have this tune running in their heads.
Is it safe to dance?

Monster Skof Tins
Looking at the fridge at work packed with lunch boxes and Monster energy drinks I start to wonder where the word Skof Tin comes from does? Way back in my memories the word Skof Tins synonymous with railway and mine workers lunch boxes made out of metal.
At first I thought Skof was a slang word for eating food in a hungry manner but after asking around and doing some digging back into time I found out that Skof is the Afrikaans word for shift. Railway workers and miners worked in shifts and their lunch or dinner was packed into Shift Tins. Later they were made out of polish steel and with brass fittings. As the saying goes “no man deserves a Skof Tin if he refuses to polish it”. Now days as you can see our Skof Tins are made from plastic.
Will we ever see the likes of Skof Tins again?

Chicken Nugget
This is Chicken Nugget, a juvenile delinquent of a peacock. He only displays aggression and has no proud peacock feathers to display nor write home about.
Chicken Nugget as we now call him has aggressively displaced Gerald from the Love Nest outside our office and then proceeded to viciously attack his reflection in the sliding doors, not just once but all day. The more we send him packing the more vocal he becomes and the attacks have become more frequent. Stupid bird, all he is good for is chicken nuggets. My nerves are on edge today, waiting for the next crash into the sliding doors. BAMMMM!!! Oh my word that must have hurt.

Blomme en Tranie
While taking Matthew home this afternoon, we decided to complete an Ingress Mission that just went live in Irene Concentration Camp. It is our first time at this sad place in Irene although we have been to the rows and rows of small children graves in Krugersdorp which are too from the British Concentration Camps that were put up to imprison Afrikaans women and children. Your heart gets pulled apart seeing the senseless loss of so many children every time.
Here is an Afrikaans poem by Jan F.E. Celliers when he saw these graves all overgrown with Kosmos flowers about 10 years after this tragedy.
Blomme
soos graan op die lande, aaneen, aaneen;
soos kindertjies selwe in feesgewaad,
in hupp’lende dans op die windjie se maat;
spierwit hul kleertjies en roserooi -
die sonlig se glans op hul hemelse tooi.
O, moedertjies wat in die verte nog ween
om blompies ontnome, wat God had geleen,
kom kyk, uit elkeen en elk bittere traan
is ‘n heldere blompie weer opgestaan.
Dis net of die Vader sê “Vertrou!
My blomme sal groei oor die kranse van rou,
Ek gee weer terug wat gegee is aan My:
waar blomme gesaai is, sal blomme gedy.”
Flowers and tears, we shall not forget. And the list of names of children so long...

Star Trek Craig T Kirk
First bit of business this weekend was to fetch Scarlet. Yes she is back up and running after spending over R4,000 to get her fuel pump replaced. Anasatia is still in the shop after water was discovered inside the transmission box. Where the water comes from nobody knows as it is an air cooled motor and it last went wading across rivers was over a year and a half ago with two services in between.
Anyway back to the weekend. Today is Craig’s birthday so we joined a number of friends over at his home to celebrate with lovely lasagne and wine. And to finish the day off in true Trekkie style out came the Star Trek communicator badge cupcakes. Ahh yes and Craig T Kirk is now trying to extinguish the candles without spraying.

Fisheye Lawrence
Woza Friday! Woza Weekend!
Weekend is upon us and this long week behind, it is time to let down our hair and relax. Here is Lawrence looking into a fisheye lens and giving us his best smile.

Reeves’ Pheasant
Walking up to the admin department this morning, I was surprised by seeing a new pair of pheasants, so I sat down in the closed enclave garden between the admin building and the executive wing, enjoying the sight of these pheasants foraging right in front of me about two arm lengths away. Along with the unknown duo was a pair of Silver Pheasants. It was pleasant just taking a break in this beautiful garden while the world tumbled on in its fast pace usual way that things do.
Later after taking some photographs, I strolled back to my office so that I could do an interweb search to identify these new pheasants. They are the Reeves’ Pheasants. The male had stunning gold colouring mixed in with blacks, browns and whites whereas the female was as expected, a pain jane with browns with a hint of gold. Oh dear, the Reeves’ Pheasant are known to be aggressive towards humans, thankfully this pair remained two arm lengths away. The one in the photo must be between 3 to 4 years old because on the interwebs, they say that the male’s tails grow about a foot per year.
The shocking news is that the Reeves’ Pheasant is on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature or IUCN Red List of threatened species where there are only about 2,000 birds remaining in the wilds of China where they originate. Let’s hope this pair enjoys their surroundings and breed like all the other bird species have being doing here at Mogale Business Park these last few weeks.

Be Bold Ernest
It looks like I skipped a few people in the Signage department of eKayaMedia. Take Ernest for example who is shown above, he is a Signage Technician. The name Ernest is derived from the Germanic word meaning bold, vigorous, or resolute.
Be bold Ernest, or italic but never regular.

Vespa Woes Continue
While Scarlet, my red Vespa GTS 300ie Super is getting repaired, I decided to use Anastasiya, my black hybrid Vespa ET8/LX150. It underwent a major service four months ago and she has been parking ever since. I tried to start her up over the weekend but cobwebs had crept in. So after topping her up with fuel and charging her battery, she started first turn this morning, typical Vespa loves to tease but reliable every time, as if to say why did you doubt.
Anastasiya got a quick little wash to get 4 months of dust off her but the Vespa woes soon return, as I discovered that the rear tyre was just about flat, so I had to limp poor Anastasiya to the garage to pump her enthusiasm back up. Riding her doesn’t quite feel the same as Scarlet has sure spoilt me with performance.
But arriving at work I saw that the rear tyre was covered with oil, after my initial investigation I discover oil leaking from the gearbox area. Not sure what to make of it I phoned Vespa South Africa for help. Louw answered and soon calmed me down. A few hours later the Vespa Mobile Service van arrived at my work and loaded Anastasiya into the back for a ride back to Vespa Service Centre based in Wynburg just outside Sandton. A good finish after a bad start to my morning, brownie points for Vespa is needed here.
I am not sure what has gone wrong with Anastasiya as it hasn’t been over 100km since the major service.

Where Mosquitoes come from?
Yesterday I posted about our pending move from our current home which has become a nightmare in itself. At first the landlord unilaterally breached our contract, then I did the wrong thing but trying to fix the breach myself and in turn fell fowl to the contract. About the same time, he started building about 100 plus small dwellings onto the property as well as turning the common property areas unusable. Take the tennis court which is now a construction yard and the swimming pool shown above.
So this is where the sudden influx of mosquitoes are coming from. Anyway the landlord did return the electricity back to what it states in our contract today even after messing me around for a week and a half. Oh well the countdown for the move has begun.

Scary Stuff
Hello sexy beast. I suppose if my self-esteem was low, I would have to say that this is what nightmares are made of, a face that only a mother could love. Yeah I am starting to feel down and depressed, hence off with the beard. Well at least it was not off with the head. After my anger yesterday, today stuff is starting to get to me, sigh.
Anyway another bit of heaviness is that we will be moving in about 6 weeks’ time, yip just a few more weeks of living in this dump. It wasn’t one when we moved in over a year and a half ago but I am afraid it is free falling down and soon to become a squatter camp, scary how quickly this can happen.

Vespa from Hell
I have never had this much trouble with my Vespa ET8 150 than what I am having with this Vespa GTS300ie Super. Although in June the ET8 150 underwent a major service which cost me over R4,000, I rode it home and parked it, now with the GTS300 out of commission, the ET8 150 doesn’t even start, go figure, even after checking battery and fuel, sigh Vespa!
Anyway back to the Vespa GTS300ie Super, soon after buying the bike back in June, it started cutting out on hot days and only starting again after 30 minutes of cooling down. At first I thought it was no fuel, then after ruling that out my thoughts went to a heat seize but that too was ruled out so my investigation went back to a fuel problem. Finally after lots of research I found out that Vespa did major recall in Europe and America in 2011 due to faulty fuel pumps which they replaced free of charge and my model and year falls smack into that recall group. Now that it is getting hotter the cut outs became every day it was becoming un-useable as a reliable mode of transport. Maybe I should have gone with that gold BMW C650GT that I too had my eye on.
Speaking to Vespa South Africa, they just shrugged it off as dirty fuel even though the symptoms were the same as the recalled faulty fuel pumps overseas. Uhmmm I had this bike for only 4 months and it is virtually new with less than 15,000km on the clock. Well I had to fork out R3,030 just for a new fuel pump, not nice at all Vespa, not nice.
Bad Vespa, bad! No biscuit for you! I am becoming disillusioned with Vespa now, we have been through so much together. Through snow, Through the Wilderness tracks and streams, Vespa has carried me to hell and back, but now as we ride through the valley of darkness it leaves me stranded, I want to simply kick its tyres goodbye and walk away. That is what is running through my head, while my heart still holds on fast to the adventure of Vespa.

Love Nest
With Gerald the peacock practically having a love pad just outside my office, love was in the air. Well not for Mr and Mrs Swan, because for the last couple of weeks now that have been attacking people walking along the path from our offices to the canteen.
Remember my earlier post showing poor Ella’s bite marks after an attack on her, which was from Mr Swan. And now we know why, walking up to the stores, which are situated behind the canteen, I noticed one of the swans sitting on what looks like a nest. Making sure the other swan wasn’t sneaking up on me, I took out my cellphone and snap this photo of the love nest. Soon we will have some cygnets waddling along.

South Africa’s Nuclear Disaster
Forget Ebola that is spreading in West Africa, down south we have our own Chernobyl or Fukushima disaster right in Johannesburg. No I am not taking about the proposed eight new nuclear reactors by 2023. I am talking about a silent killer blowing in the wind.
Driving home after work from the west rand I noticed the dust blowing off the mine dumps. This dust was being blown towards the City of Johannesburg. Little does the public know that this dust is radioactive, yes highly radioactive dust from mine dumps like the one shown above which is situated between Randfontein and Krugersdorp.
Another little known fact is that uranium was mined here for the Manhattan Project which produced the Second World War atomic bombs and continued supplying the United States and the United Kingdom deep into the Cold War. In 50s and 60s the processes was not as refined as they are now and the result is these mine dumps which are still highly radioactive.
A few months back I saw a map depicting the current levels of radioactivity in the areas of Randfontein and Krugersdorp, and it was scary, real scary. It was colour coded with orange and red everywhere. It is red where this mine dump is and there was even a road, the R41, a main artery road from Randfontein going south towards Johannesburg that was red. The road had an arrow pointing to itand text stating that it was built from radioactive material, ouch.
And then there are the mine dumps dating back to the 50s. The other day I saw a small business making bricks for residential houses right next to one of these mine dumps using the very same radioactive sand for the bricks.
Interesting that this mine dump photograph has a cross on the left.
And then the wind blows...

Springbucks in the Rain
The first thunderstorm of the summer has released its bounty over Gauteng. You can smell the rain in the air as the ground cried out for the large rain drops. It was like everything was alive, Gerald the peacock got the girl right in front of my window, I was in shock from the birds and the bees’ education that was being played out in front of me that I forgot to reach for my camera. Oh well in about a months time we should have some baby peafowls.
Monday and Norma Jean, the two baby springbucks had their first feel of what rain is, they were bouncing as springbucks do, as the drops landed onto them. I hope they enjoyed their first shower as there will be many more where that came from.

Póg mo thóin
Well póg mo thóin to you too my boy or as it is commonly written outside of Ireland pogue mahone. It is Gaeilge or Irish for kiss my arse. Today’s photo reminded me of póg mo thóin as this peacock tried to defend off two other male suitors and at the same time impress the peahen. Seldom do you get the chance to see the rear end of a peacock not that I wanted too but Gerald this peacock was doing his best to become the daidí.
Póg mo thóin, now that reminds me of the Pouges, a Celtic Punk band that I enjoy, now let me go digging up some CDs, they must be somewhere collecting dust, and a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go.

Monday Hair Day
It has been other six months since Nomangaliso and I have been working together, and now we are back working at Bosasa as a team. It was a fresh start to this Monday as Noma walked in with a new hairstyle. Yip, it is coming back to me now, as I remember she used to change your hairstyle every few weeks and at the time I used to ask her “Human or Plastic” just to stir.
Well no more bad hair days on a Monday.

Ugly Cat
One of our cat, Little Boy, I call Ugly because well he doesn’t look cuddly and pretty like cats should. Anyway here is Ugly lying on the window sill box enjoying the afternoon sun, I tried to sneak up on him to take a photograph but he must have heard me and looked up. You can see clearly why I call him Ugly, with his lazy eye and funny jaw that permanently shows off his canines. There, there, you go back to sleep, and enough with that mournful cry of yours.

Robynne
This weekend is Rage, the computer and gaming expo held annually and that is where Matthew is spending the whole day. Yes that is him taken of for the day as this is his last weekend before the school holidays end, while I start looking for a new home.
Yes, on the home front, while trying to address our issues with the landlord we only got a termination of our lease slapped into our faces with his words “I am doing you a favour”. Yeah right, it now looks like that he wanted us out in the first place as he squeezes more people onto the property. So now we are defiantly back in the market for a new home.
Anyway tomorrow is Robynne’s birthday which I believe she is going to be 27 years old. We joined them for pizza at Picolinos to celebrate this evening. With all that has being going on lately in my life, I forgot my camera at home, oh well the trusty cellphone camera has to suffice.

Tim Hughes
Here I am to worship, as Tim Hughes, a worship leader at the Holy Trinity church in Brompton, London, leads us this evening here at BBC. Yes it was a small venue for an international worship leader like Tim but his heart is with the local church as he heads up Worship Central, and here we were to worship Jesus the Messiah and give all back to God.
Jesus the Messiah, you alone are wonderful. You alone are counsellor, everlasting Father. Mighty in the heavens, never to forget the love you displayed upon a cross. Son of God, I thank you. Prince of Peace, I love your name.

Nightmare on Berta Road
We have been staying here on this small holding off Berta Road for over a year and a half now after being approached by a friend of mine’s ex-partner, no names mentioned, the rent was good with electricity and water included and on the surface the move here seemed ideal. There was a small construction business and four cottages on the property along with a swimming pool and tennis court but little did we know that the owner had other ideas.
Little did we know that our landlord’s construction business was going down and that he decided to refocus his business from the building industry to low cost accommodation. He started by converting his storage containers into rentable rooms with communal kitchens and showers. Next was converting the existing cottages as they became vacant from 2 bedrooms into as many rooms as he could and at the same time the building of smaller rooms started. When we moved in there was only about 10 people living on the two hectare property, now there is about 40 with more rooms getting built to nearly double this amount.
To make more space for the extra rooms, the landlord has moved what is remaining of his construction company onto the tennis court in front of our cottage and this is our view now, pretty isn’t it? And to make matters worse he has put in pre-paid electricity meters ignoring the fact that electricity was included in our rent as per our contract but this doesn’t faze our landlord.
After sparingly using as little electricity as we could we worked out that last night we used R200 electricity. Yes this will put our estimated electricity bill at R6000 per month which is nearly double our rent. I am at wits end as to what to do as it seems our landlord doesn’t care. We want to buy a house again sometime next year but now we find ourselves back in the market to rent a 2 bedroom house or cottage that allow pets. While I look around, take a moment to enjoy our nightmare view from our front door, is this worth R10,000 per month?

Dipontsho
The third person who started at eKayaMedia on Monday is Dipontsho or simply shortened as Pontsho. She is busy with her journalism degree and has joined the super team here at Bosasa as an intern. And by the third day she had already intergraded nicely with us and here’s to a successful start of her career in journalism.

Tall Phillip
Along with Noma, a giant of a man started yesterday, Phillip he who stands head and shoulders above all. It was kind of hard not to miss him really, as he joins Wayne as a Brand Co-ordinator in the print section of eKayaMedia, the brand and marketing arm of Bosasa.
We at the New Media side of the office wish Phillip all the best as joins the super heroes’ team and excuse the pun, as he soars to new heights in his career.

Noma at Bosasa
After a number of negotiations, Noma finally arrived at Bosasa as the Content Strategist after her mini-moon. She recently got married and took a short honeymoon hence the name mini-moon. You would have remembered Noma from my stint at National Positions, it was here that we became good friends. It has been a busy Monday because alongside Noma two other people started, Philip a Brand Co-ordinator, and Pontsho a Journalist Intern. Here is Noma doing what woman do best, she went up to the stores to collect her corporate clothing and came back with her arms full. Now I think we are ready to tackle the world.

Ten Pin Afternoon
On Matthew’s bucket list of things to do during these school holidays was to go ten pin bowling with his dad, so this afternoon was the day set aside to show Matthew how I roll. In the end I had a number of spares which kept me just in the lead even though Matthew managed a strike or was that two? At least in ten pin bowling you can get three strikes and not get out.

Regular Haircuts
I remember a time when Matthew’s hair was down to his shoulders. It got easy to pull the wool over someone’s eyes as to if he was a boy or girl.
For example while working at Metrorail I took Matthew to work for Bring a Girl Child to Work Day as I belief this was just discrimination. Afterwards during the publicity photoshoot, the then South African Minister of Transport saw Matthew and decided he wanted a white girl sitting next to him amongst the many black girl children that was assembled. So Matthew got to sit next to the minister as the token white girl with no one being the wiser that she was a he.
Now with regular haircuts, no one can ever be confused as Matthew is growing up to be a strapping young man.

Missing Jade and Minky
After arriving to a huge welcome from all my pets and settling down for the weekend, I took a walk in the garden with some doggy treats. Jade, my smallest Italian Greyhound, along with Minky our cat, where playing hide and seek and with the doggy treats in my hand, I could only entice Podge, Maxy, and Patch to me. Here in today’s photo I was asking them “Where’s Jade? Where’s Minky?”
Podge, the Jack Russell, was only interested in the treat and couldn’t keep his eyes off, whereas the Italian Greyhounds where alert, looking for Jade and Minky but also not straying too far from the treats. What must have been going through their minds was “Don’t worry about them two, they are somewhere in the garden.”

Fiú dá siúlfainn i ngleann an dorchadais
I had a strange day today which because of the sensitive nature I can’t indulge much, all I can say is forget the sprinkling of fairy dust we have muti dust. Although I am now tempted to take baby powder to work today which will freak some people out, I will have to leave it up to God. There is a spiritual war out there folks, all around us, and my European culture sometimes is oblivious to understanding of the traditional African belief system which is peppered with Christendom. I pray for discernment as I walk through the valley of darkness knowing that God is holding my hand and his angels all around me, protecting. Have no fear for the war has already been won!
Fiú dá siúlfainn i ngleann an dorchadais, níor bhaol liom an t‑olc agus tú faram le do shlat is do bhachall chun sólás a thabhairt dom.
Okay I am getting distracted, today’s photograph is nothing about the dark day I’ve had but it is a pink distraction of sorts, yes I mean this is only a fraction of the pink stuff found on Ella’s desk. She must be tickled pink as I feared.

Why do superheroes wear capes?
Although not all superheroes wear a cape, the cape may have functional uses as protection or even it can be used as a disguise. The earliest superhero that I can think back to that wore a cape was Zorro and other than cloak and dagger I can’t really find any use for his cape other than tripping over it. Nothing inspires me about Superman’s cape. Batman’s cape was bullet proof, but it wasn’t what was underneath the cape that defined him, now was it.
Wayne, our latest addition to our super hero family here at eKayaMedia, he started as a Brand Co-Ordinator and has yet to prove he is a superhero worthy to wear the Bosasa brand. Although he shares the name of Batman, I hope he doesn’t wear a cape when he is home. Anyway we wish him all the best using his super powers to achieve and grow within our team.
So who is your superhero and does he wear a cape? My favourite marvel comic hero from my youth was Nightcrawler, in the 2000AD comics my favourite was Rogue Trooper, and none of them wore a cape. Ahhh but wait one of my superheroes does wear a cape, Dark Wing Duck, he used his cape as a disguise of sorts.
What does a subatomic duck say?
Quark!
DW, let’s get dangerous!
