Katyn
Monday again, and after the restful weekend it was back to work. During lunch I had to venture out into the augmented reality world of Ingress and found myself at the foot of the Warszawa mound.
There are three granite slabs lying at the foot of the monument here. The one is inscribed "Warszawa 1.VIII-2.X.1944 In memory of the heroes of the Warsaw Rising and Polish airmen who supported the Home Army". The other inscribed "Katyn – 1940 In memory of 14500 Polish prisoners of war murdered by Stalin’s Assassins. Remains of 4264 of these prisoners were identified in massgraves at Karyn, USSR. The world conscience calls for Justice". And the last is inscribed "Warszawa 8.VIII -21.IX.1944 Warsaw Airlift Grateful Poles honour the part played by the South African Air Force".
After a bit of digging around, I found out what I thought was the Warszawa Monument in the James and Ethel Grey Park was actually the Katyn Memorial. It was designed by Andrzej Romanowicz in memory of the Katyn Forest Massacre where thousands of Polish died at the hands of the Soviets.
