Our Lady of the Cedars of Lebanon


Around the late 1800s, immigrants from Lebanon started arriving in South Africa and majority of them were of the Maronite faith. The Maronite Catholic Mission open their first church in Johannesburg in 1910 and in 1991 Our Lady of the Cedars of Lebanon was opened with this beautiful shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in the gardens.

Riding home from work every day, I pass under the gaze of this shrine and today I just had to stop and take a photograph with the ominous clouds looming over the shrine. In the peaceful gardens, I thought about all the Christians still irking out a living in Lebanon, squashed between the Jews on one side and the Shiites Muslims on the other. Will there ever be peace in our time?
